As a lover of real wigs, the biggest headache is the appearance of a strange odor after wearing it for a long time - even though it has just been taken care of, it comes with the smell of oil fumes and sweat when going out, which not only lowers the refinement of the design, but also puts people in an awkward situation of "not daring to wear, not wanting to wear". Although real wigs have a texture similar to natural hair, they lack scalp oil nourishment, have residual odors, and improper care can damage hair strands. By mastering these targeted tips, you can efficiently remove odors, provide gentle care, and keep real wigs fresh for a long time.![]()
1、Find the root cause: Where does the odor of real wigs come from?
To accurately remove odors, it is more efficient to first identify the source of the odor. The odor of real wigs is not a problem with the material itself, but mainly stems from three types of scenarios. Targeted response is necessary to achieve twice the result with half the effort:
● Environmental residues: The most common sources of odors are oil fumes, hotpot odors, and outdoor dust absorbed during wear;
● Sweat stain penetration: In summer or after long-term wear, sweat stains can remain on the hair net and hair roots, which can easily breed bacteria and produce odors;
● Improper cleaning and care: Residual cleaning agents, incomplete drying after cleaning, or damp storage environment can cause moldy and stuffy odors.
2、Scenarios based deodorization: from emergency to deep, refreshing and residue free
Although human wigs have strong tolerance, frequent washing can accelerate hair drying. It is necessary to choose the corresponding method according to the severity of the odor, taking into account both deodorization and care to avoid damaging hair.
● Daily emergency deodorization: quickly alleviate mild odors
After wearing it, if there is only a slight smell of oil fumes and sweat, there is no need to rush to wash it with water. It can be quickly deodorized in a few simple steps, and it can also moisturize and protect the silk. Prepare a clean spray bottle, fill it with warm water at around 30 ℃, and add 1-2 drops of neutral hair care essential oil (preferably jojoba oil or lanolin essential oil, mild and non irritating). Shake well and gently spray on the surface of the hair, avoiding the inside of the hair net (to prevent moisture from breeding bacteria). Then use a wide toothed comb to slowly comb from the end of the hair towards the roots, and hang the wig in a well ventilated and cool place (such as an indoor window or a shaded area on a balcony). Let it sit for 1-2 hours, and the odor will naturally dissipate.
Note for avoiding the pit: Never spray perfume directly on the real wig! Perfume contains alcohol and essence, which is not only easy to remain, but also may mix with the odor to form a more unpleasant smell. Long term use will damage the hair scales, resulting in dry and irritable hair.
● Regular deep deodorization: wear every 3-5 times to clean from the source
Adjust the frequency according to the wearing environment. Wear it 3-5 times for daily commuting or 2-3 times for outdoor exposure or sweating, and then perform a gentle cleaning to thoroughly remove odors and residues.
■ Soaking and Moisturizing: Soak the real wig in warm water at around 30 ℃ for 5 minutes to fully wet the hair and hair net, avoiding direct soaking with hot water (high temperatures can damage the hair structure, causing fading and drying).
■ Gentle cleaning: Add a small amount of specialized human hair wig shampoo or neutral amino acid shampoo (avoid alkaline regular shampoos as they can damage the hair scales), gently press and rub the hair with your hands, focusing on cleaning the hair net and the roots of the hair (mainly sweat stains and dust residue), and do not twist or rub vigorously to prevent hair tangling and breakage.
■ Rinsing and curing: Rinse the hair with clean water from the root to the end of the hair repeatedly until there is no foam residue (residual detergent will breed bacteria and produce odor). Take an appropriate amount of hair conditioner and apply it evenly from the middle to the end of the hair (avoiding hair webs and roots to prevent hair webs from becoming sticky). Soak for 5 minutes and rinse off with water again.
■ Drying and finishing: Wrap the wig with a dry towel with good water absorption, gently press to absorb moisture (without twisting), put the wig on the stand, and let it air dry naturally in a ventilated and cool place. After it is completely dry, the odor and residue will be removed together.![]()
3、Special odor treatment: eliminate moldy and stubborn oil fume odors
For stubborn odors such as damp mold and hot pot barbecue that are difficult to remove using conventional methods, targeted techniques can be used to gently remove the odor without damaging the hair.
● Mold odor treatment: First, hang the wig in a well ventilated area and let it air dry for 1 hour (avoiding exposure to sunlight to prevent hair fading and damage to hair scales), then mix it with white vinegar water (warm water: white vinegar=10:1) and soak the wig for 10 minutes (white vinegar can gently kill bacteria and decompose mold odor). After soaking, remove it and clean it once according to the above deep cleaning process. After drying, the moldy smell can be completely eliminated.
● Stubborn oil fume odor treatment: During deep cleaning, add 1 teaspoon of baking soda to 500ml of warm water. Baking soda can strongly absorb the oil fume odor, and the cleaning effect is more thorough. After washing, the hair will still be soft and shiny, without dryness.
In fact, the odor problem of real wigs can mostly be avoided through scientific care. Mastering these small tricks for different scenarios can not only bid farewell to the awkward odor, but also maintain the natural and refreshing texture of the wig, accompanying you for a longer time.
